The fall chill has settled in.  Okay, okay, so it hasn’t been too unbearable yet but we all know that Jack Frost is hanging out in some back alley right around the corner. Saunas are one of the best ways to beat the chill.   In addition to warming you up, saunas pose other benefits such as:

  • Stress/fatigue reduction:  studies have shown that frequent use of a sauna will significantly reduce stress, tension and fatigue.  Many people emerge from the sauna feeling relaxed and energized.   Many spas have added a sauna to their relaxation repertoire.
  • Relaxation of muscles:  modern saunas often approach temperatures greater than 200 degrees Fahrenheit.  This heat is absorbed by the skin and helps to soothe and relax muscles.  This is the primary reason that a sauna feels so good after exercise or intense workout.
  • Regular use of a sauna will help condition and improve the circulatory system
  • Lose weight!  Saunas are a great tool to burn additional calories.
  • Research also shows that saunas can help induce a deeper sleep.
  • Cleanses the skin:  saunas are one of the oldest beauty secrets.  A good sweat will rinse away bacteria and replace dead skin cells with healthy new ones.  Frequent sauna use will bring back that healthy-glow and vitality to your skin.
  • Flush Away Toxins:  As the core body temperature rises in the sauna, sweat induces and helps rid our body of chemicals such as: lead, copper, zinc and mercury.
  • Boosts Immune System:  Medical research has shown that saunas reduce the occurrence of the common cold and flu viruses.  The medical reasoning behind this is the heat and steam stimulate the body to produce white blood cells more rapidly.   White blood cells fight illness and infection.

Cedar has been the traditional wood of choice when building a sauna.   Cedar is very moisture resistant by nature and holds up extremely well in the steamy sauna environment.  Additional factors that make cedar a great choice is that even in temperatures above 200○ Fahrenheit the wood will remain cool to the touch and will not warp.  Aspen is also widely accepted as good alternative to cedar.

The Tongue & Groove Store stocks 1×6 cedar end-matched (machined on all 4 sides) or in fixed lengths. We also stock Aspen lumber. Stop by or call us with your dimensions today! Don’t wait until it’s -30○, you’ll be wishing you listened to me!
