I get a lot of people that ask me what we do at The Tongue and Groove Store. T&G Paneling is always included in the answer. I am often surprised by people’s reaction. Paneling, they ask with raised eyebrows and a distant look on their face. I immediately know they are back in 1970 envisioning those dark, ugly, 4×8 sheets of paneling that exude every meaning of the word cheap. In reality, T&G paneling can be used in a number of ways to enhance the look and feel of any room. Wood adds depth and dimension to a room. A variety of species provides a wide color spectrum to choose from and doesn’t lock you into that “wood colored” color. There are light colored woods such as Aspen and Basswood that lend an airy feel to the environment. Pine and White Ash have a more golden color to them, which will help warm up a room. Knotty woods will give your room a more rustic and ethereal appeal, whereas totally clear lumber will richen the look and appeal of your room, giving it a higher-end feel.
When considering putting T&G paneling up in your room, whether it be on the walls or ceiling, you don’t have to go overboard. Consider doing a wainscot application (half of a wall), an accent wall or only the ceiling. This will help add dimension to your room, without being overbearing. Many places use wood to enhance their décor, next time you’re out and about take a look around and start getting ideas for your own space. View our gallery for more ideas on how to use T&G paneling! No matter what, when someone says the word “paneling” to you, don’t go back to 1970!
